He was born to Tim Cahill Sr., an English-born Irish descent and Sisifo Cahill who is of Samoan descent. Cahill shares the same parents with his three siblings; Opa Cahill, Sean Cahill and Chris Cahill. Despite coming from a rugby league-playing family, he was pushed to play football as a child.

He had three goals in the competition.

Cahill was included on Bert van Marwijk’s World Cup roster in May of that year, although he only made one appearance, coming off the bench in the 2-0 defeat to Peru in the 63rd minute.

Cahill declared his retirement from international football on July 16, 2018, but changed his mind and decided to play in one last home friendly against Lebanon in November of that same year.
